Celebrating Success: Avraj the TV Chef
16 December, 2019
Avraj went to Priesthorpe School, where he first met our very own, Chris Humberstone! Chris is one of our dedicated Shine Careers advisors who still works for aspire-igen and is still helping students at Priesthorpe School. When Avraj was in Year 11 he had several ideas about the future and was not sure whether he should stay on for the 6th Form or develop vocational skills at college.
As part of the session Chris asked about his interests outside school as well as his subject choices and progress in school. He said he really enjoyed cooking and had been cooking with his grandad for many years, so they used the National Careers Service to look at what was needed to be a successful Chef. They then talked about the hours and environment as well as the skills that would be useful, such as being able to follow instructions, work to deadlines and an ability to work well under extreme pressure.
Avraj was enthusiastic about this idea so they researched courses in Catering and he decided to go to Bradford College. At the end of his training at Bradford College, he applied for jobs and was delighted to be offered a position at the well-known Box Tree restaurant in Ilkley. The exact same restaurant Leeds-born Michelin Star Chef Marco Pierre-White trained.
The success didn’t stop there however; Avraj applied for this year’s addition of Masterchef, The Professionals and qualified! He was on TV as the youngest competitor on 12th November edition of the show and did extremely well, particularly as he was the only competitor that knew how to cook Razor Clams! He went through to the quarter-finals against some very experienced chefs and although his dishes were praised as good food and beautifully cooked, he was knocked out.
Avraj wasn’t too downhearted with this result and has already moved on. He wanted to get different experiences, so left The Box Tree and is currently working with Michael O’Hare at The Man Behind The Curtain restaurant in Leeds. This is currently the only Michelin Starred Restaurant in West Yorkshire.
Everyone from aspire-igen, and especially Chris, would like to congratulate Avraj on everything he has accomplished in such a short space of time and would like to wish him good luck for his future career in catering. We are sure this is the start of a long and successful career!
Well Done and Congratulations Avraj!
