Saleem gets experience in aspire-igen's marketing department
Saleem came to see a Careers Adviser at aspire-igen to discuss his future career path. He'd recently gained a great degree in marketing and had some good work experience under his belt but felt like he needed some more to boost his confidence. The Careers Adviser arranged for Saleem to complete one week's work experience in our own marketing department and we were very impressed! Here's a diary that Saleem wrote to capture his thoughts and document the skills he gained during the week.
Rachel, Marketing Team Leader, introduced me to the variety of projects which the marketing department are working on. The diversity and the wide spectrum of different projects were very exciting and fascinating. This introduction allowed me to learn more about all the different services which aspire-igen offer. Rachel was very clear with her explanation and this was the perfect ice breaker opportunity.
I was then introduced to Amanda who is the Marketing coordinator. She introduced me to a number of exciting software packages which she uses on a regular basis. I firstly shadowed Amanda on how she uses Microsoft InDesign for newsletters - this was a very complex yet informative software package which I enjoyed using thoroughly.
Mailchimp was the next software package that Amanda introduced me to. This multi-purpose software is used for mailshots for people who have signed for job bulletin updates. I found this software very challenging, however very interesting.
After the lunch break, Amanda and I had excellent fun composing a variety of messages for a number of social media platforms.
Overall Day 1 was very exciting and I enjoyed using different software packages and systems for a variety of platforms. The marketing department only consists of 2 people, however they both work in true harmony and due to this the whole department is like a well-oiled machine.
Today was a big day for me because I did not have Amanda to support me, therefore I had to put everything I learnt from day 1 into practice. I mainly worked on the Aspirations newsletter and my main aim was to have this completed before lunch. This was an ambitious yet hard target to achieve. Lunch fast approached and I was finding Indesign hard to work with due to the software freezing and to add salt to my misery I was unable to access all the pictures and documentations required to work on the newsletter. I eventually submitted my first draft to Rachel and she was able to provide me with constructive feedback which I fully took on board.
The highlight of the day was the very fun and important meeting with Luke, the international project leader. This meeting highlighted the variety of events and how marketing could play an influential role in these projects.
Day 2 was a very challenging day with a mixture of ups and downs. However, I did find that I am much more confident with InDesign and I also realised that there is no wrong question as it is better to ask rather than getting it wrong.
It was planned beforehand that today would involve moving chairs and furniture to set up a variety of events which would then be photographed. Due to my leg injury I was unable to move chairs, however I battled on and helped to set the first event. At this point my leg injury was unbearable and I was barely able to walk. Rachel recommended that I go home and rest my leg as the majority of the day would involve reallocating chairs and tables. I was reluctant to leave, but I threw in the towel and at lunch time I decided to go home.
Day 3 felt like a big disappointment as I felt that my leg had let me down, however I battled on and I manged to stay half day.
After resting my leg I felt rejuvenated and energized and I was optimistic that today will be a very good day and this exactly was the case. After working hard on Aspirations I was finally getting used to InDesign thus my confidence levels had increased massively and I was able to complete a second draft version of the newsletter. I had always found mailchimp a handful, however with the expert tutoring of Rachel I was able to master mail chimp very quickly. I eventually completed the bulletins and I also uploaded new contacts to existing bulletins. My overall confidence levels around the department had also improved as I was engaging in a variety of conversations with other staff members. Most importantly I was able to learn new skills and my enthusiasm was very high after today’s successful day. I also suggested some very unique social media ideas to Rachel which she really liked.
Overall day 4 was a very successful day as I fully adapted to InDesign and mailchimp. However, I did appreciate that there was still room for improvement.
My last day was emotional as I had now fully adjusted to the whole environment. I did not let my emotion get the best of me though as I wanted to finish my last day on a high. I spent most of the day working on the newsletter which I completed and submitted to Rachel to check. I also composed a very catchy social media post for Amanda. Day 5 was a very productive day as I also completed feedback for Rachel and Amanda.
Overall the whole experience has been a wonderful journey and I have learnt many new skills which I shall take with me. This whole experience has taught me many lessons as I am now not afraid to take risks. I am well aware that this experience will have a lasting effect on me going forward. Most importantly this experience has boosted my confidence levels. I feel that my marketing journey has just begun and this experience has kick-started my marketing career. I am very optimistic and excited about the future.
