'ADVICE FROM A PROFESSIONAL CAREERS ADVISER IS EXTREMELY HELPFUL'
Lewis had his first guidance interview in Year 10 at Priesthorpe School. He wanted to find out about his options and make decisions about whether he continued with full-time education at school or college. Chris, his Careers Adviser, spent some time explaining the different options, including how apprenticeships are set up and the different jobs you could do.
They met several times in Year 11 to discuss how Lewis was feeling about the future and what might suit him after Year 11. Lewis used the National Careers Service website for information on the different types of jobs and it helped him decide that he was keen on Engineering. From there they used the UCAS Progress website to research full-time courses and he found Engineering courses at college.
Lewis wanted to work so he also spent time searching for engineering apprenticeship vacancies. He applied for several apprenticeships and eventually found a Medical Engineering apprenticeship with the NHS. They talked through the process of applying and he took time over completing the application - he was delighted when he was offered the job!
Lewis is now working for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals, working in many different medical engineering disciplines across the sites and undertaking the work-based NVQ Level 3 in Medical Engineering Maintenance. He also goes to college one day a week to study BTEC Level 3 in Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
Lewis told us ‘I feel that getting advice from a professional Careers Adviser is extremely helpful. They help you set out and understand better what you want to do and what opportunities are available to you. I feel that in this day and age, apprenticeships are the way forwards. The fact that as a young person, you can earn money whilst you learn is not only helpful as a school leaver but also lets you set out the rest of your life.’
