Feel the Fear and do it anyway
Daniel Benn joined the aspire2work study programme in January 2015 with no formal qualifications. He had been home schooled since year 7 so felt quite shy, anxious and was uncomfortable speaking out in front of other students within a group setting.
Daniel came onto the course to gain some qualifications in maths and English. He also expressed an interest in ICT. Since being on the programme Daniel has gained a number of certificates including Functional Skills maths and English level 2 and ICT User Award level 1. He has also recently completed the GCSE English and maths course and is currently awaiting results.
Aside from these qualifications, Daniel has also developed his personal and social skills. He has had an attendance rate of over 95% and his time keeping is exceptional. Daniel is a motivated student; he arrives at least 15 minutes before a session begins and is ready and keen to learn.
He is willing to participate in any task and has even attempted and succeeded in activities he would have previously shied away from. For example, despite his nerves, Daniel has delivered two individual presentations in front of a group and participated in a group presentation with people outside of his friendship circle. Over time, with support and patience, Daniel has gone from strength to strength.
