SHINE CAREERS SUPPORT MY FUTURE PROJECT
17 July, 2019
In May the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) launched its My Future project. This project is being funded by The Careers and Enterprise Company with the aim being to develop a model of good practice to ensure deaf young people have access to high-quality careers advice.
The NDCS have teamed up with a careers service in each of the 5 areas where the My Future programme will be delivered. Aspire-igen are delighted that the Shine Careers Service have been chosen for the project in Bradford and Leeds.
The NDCS delivered the first of their My Future workshops throughout May. These pilot workshops took place in Birmingham, Bradford and Leeds and reached a total of 47 deaf young people. 4 Shine Careers Advisers took part in an enjoyable training day in London on 30th May (Deborah Lister, Claire Garton, Emma Robinson and Karen Hodgson). They attended a workshop around deaf awareness and information on working with deaf young people.
The Shine Careers Advisers have already taken part in careers workshops with deaf children in Bradford at Hanson School and in Leeds at Allerton Grange Academy. The support of Shine continues with one-to-one personal guidance for those learners in July. Further workshops and career guidance will be provided for different cohorts of learners in the Autumn and Spring terms in 2019-20.
The outcomes of the 18 month programme will feed into a careers advice toolkit. The toolkit will be made available to local authorities across England and will enable them to deliver careers support to the deaf young people in their area.
