Careers Live 2019 – our biggest and best yet!
15 April, 2019
Careers Live is aspire-igen’s bi-annual careers conference. It is the largest in the north, and is organised and entirely funded by aspire-igen. This year was the fourth bi-annual event, held at Leeds Town Hall.
The conference welcomed over 200 delegates from 94 schools and colleges, as well as universities, local authorities and other careers companies from across Yorkshire, the Humber and the North East.
Throughout the day there were workshops and keynote speeches from leading careers professionals, including Chief Executive of the Careers & Enterprise Company Claudia Harris, leading academic, Tristram Hooley, renown researcher and policy maker Deidre Hughes and head of unit, skills and qualifications DG Employment at European Commission, Alison Crabb.
Feedback from the event has been extremely positive, with delegates commenting that it was an “interesting” and “valuable” event. One attendee said that they most enjoyed “finding out information about a range of different topics and listening to the different questions asked by the audience”.
The conference also provided free workshops that focused on sharing best practice, practical solutions to common problems and guidance around how to meet the Government’s eight Gatsby Career Benchmarks¹. Delegates chose from a menu of workshops, ensuring that the discussions were tailored to their needs.
Katharine Needham, vice principal at the Co-operative Academy in Leeds, ran a workshop on the day. She said: “Meeting Gatsby Benchmarks is really important for schools and colleges in the UK. Although it’s not always easy to know where to start, in my opinion, there is no point in trying to reinvent the wheel. There are plenty of educators able to share their experiences and best practise with one another to make it easier. This was the third time we have attended Aspire-igen’s Careers Live - it’s a fantastic opportunity to learn, network and share knowledge.”
Speaking about the event, Joanne Hainsworth, Head of Aspire Enterprises, said: “Careers Live is an amazing opportunity for schools and colleges to learn from the thought leaders of the industry.
“Since 2012, we have more than quadrupled the number of delegates at Careers Live and all feedback tells us that it is a very valuable experience for those who attend. This year was the biggest and best yet, in the fantastic setting of Leeds Town Hall.”
