The Canteen adopts a cup half full approach to sustainability
24 September, 2019
On Friday 4th October, The Canteen will be raising awareness of World No Disposable Cup Day.
As an incentive for customers to use reusable coffee cups, take out hot drinks will be available for a reduced price of £1.75 all day for those who bring along a reusable travel mug.
16 billion disposable coffee cups are used globally each year. These are mainly coated with plastic to laminate the inside and use plastic lids. In the UK alone 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups are used each year or 7 million per day. Half a million are dropped on the floor and less than 1% are recycled.
Catering and hospitality Manager, Joe Grant said “We are all now very aware of the little changes we can make in our lives to have a big impact on improving our environment. The Canteen is now well into the swing of its sustainability programme and we have more exciting changes to come.
Last month we used our final recyclable coffee cup and have now switched to a compostable cup and lid which biodegrades within 3 weeks. I am also currently in discussions with suppliers to design and create The Canteen’s very own reusable coffee cup“.
To take advantage of this offer and show your commitment to sustainability, just bring along your reusable cup and quote ‘No Disposable Cup Day’. Offer available all day on Friday 4th October (7.30am - 2.30pm).
