Bradford teenagers given opportunity to work in some of Yorkshire’s finest establishments
04 September, 2017
16 local students will be given the opportunity to work in some of Yorkshire’s finest establishments as aspire-igen opens a brand new training café and cookery school in Bradford city centre.
It will be all hands on deck for the students as they gain practical skills helping to run the café. Lead by the aspire enterprises division, aspire-igen has acquired a city centre café based in their Bradford Opportunity Centre (directly opposite The Midland). Over the next few weeks they will be transforming it into 'The Canteen' - a bright, modern café serving breakfast and lunches. The students will help to cater for meetings and events held in the event space (based in the same building), local business lunches and to members of the public, as well as free lunches for students attending other training courses.
The Canteen will open in September. Right next door, learners will have the opportunity to take part in catering and hospitality training in the accompanying Cookery School. Here they will develop the skills they need to progress in the industry, before putting the skills into practice preparing food and serving customers in The Canteen.
Aspire-igen is the north’s largest supplier of employability, training and guidance services. It works with employers across a wide range of sectors and strives to develop courses that provide young people with the skills that employers really value. Just last year they opened a Railtrack Maintenance course in response to the huge recent government investment in infrastructure and programmes. The Canteen and The Cookery School is aspire-igen’s latest venture to support young people into an industry which has exciting job opportunities and to help to address the growing skills gap in this sector.
The Canteen and The Cookery School are generating a lot of excitement with employers such as the 5 starred Grand Hotel in York and Oulton Hall in Leeds getting involved to offer Bradford learners the opportunity of work experience, training and careers talks. The course is run in partnership with local employer, The Midland Hotel, which is situated directly opposite The Canteen. The Midland Hotel have been involved with the project from the start including selecting the qualification and the units the students will do as part of their course.
Jo Hainsworth, Head of Aspire Enterprises said “We are delighted to have support from some of Yorkshire’s finest establishment. This means our learners will have the opportunity to experience all aspects of the catering and hospitality industry from a café culture to 5 star dining. It gives them a direct link to world of work and means that securing a job or apprenticeship after their course is a strong possibility”.
Employers in the sector recognise that there is a growing skills gap in the industry and have given the thumbs up to aspire-igen for encouraging young people to join the industry.
This new venture has also brought new employment opportunities in the city. A newly hired Catering and Hospitality Manager will be responsible for the day to day running of The Canteen, The Cookery School and The Event Space, with a dedicated Catering and Hospitality Tutor to take learners through their City & Guilds qualifications. Further recruitment is underway for two, part-time Catering Assistants and an Events Co-ordinator.
